How to Get a Portuguese NIF: The Definitive Guide for Foreigners

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the single most important number for any foreigner doing business in Portugal. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, sign a lease, register a company, or file taxes.

What Exactly Is a NIF?

A NIF is a nine-digit tax identification number issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, or AT). Every individual and entity operating in Portugal — citizen or foreign — must have one.

Who Needs a Fiscal Representative?

If you are a non-EU/EEA resident and do not have a Portuguese address, you are legally required to appoint a fiscal representative. This is a Portuguese tax resident who receives correspondence from the tax authority on your behalf and is jointly liable for your tax obligations.

EU citizens can apply directly at any Finanças office without a fiscal representative, though having one is still recommended if you are not resident in Portugal.

How to Apply

There are two methods: in-person at a local Finanças office, or remotely through an authorized representative. The in-person route is free but requires a trip to Portugal. The remote route typically costs €80–299 and includes fiscal representation for the first year.

Documents Required

For a personal NIF application, you need: a valid passport (original or certified copy), proof of address in your home country (utility bill or bank statement, less than 3 months old), and a power of attorney if applying remotely.

Timeline

In-person applications are typically processed same-day. Remote applications through a representative take 5–7 business days. Once issued, your NIF is permanent and does not expire.
